Craft beer comes into its own in Alabama

If you notice a naked pig perched on a tap handle at a local bar, don’t be alarmed. It is just the first offering from nascent brewing company Back Forty Beer.
Nationwide, craft brewing has been growing by leaps and bounds. Finally, it is growing in Alabama. The day Gov. Bob Riley signed House Bill 373, known as the “Free the Hops” bill, Back Forty Beer Co. was filling its first kegs of Naked Pig Pale Ale, heralding a new era for craft brewers in Alabama and the start of a new venture for two young men from Alabama.

I tried their Naked Pig Pale Ale at the sold-out Magic City Brewfest in Birmingham and it was good.

The Magic City Brewfest got a bit of extra magic this year with the excitement of tasting new products brought in with passage of the Gourmet Beer Bill.
